Description
Looking like large raw-eggs drifting through the Pacific, Atlantic and through the Mediterranean sea, Egg Yolk Jellies are usually easy to identify. Those with large bells, have a yellow or golden-yellow center - as their common name implies. However, small Egg Jellyfish or Fried-egg Jellies are usually colorless or milky white, missing the egg-yolk looking center.
Egg Jellies (Phacellophora camtschatica) have bells which often grow up to 24 inches (61 cm) in diameter. These jellies pull about 20 feet (6 m) of nematocyst-laden, stinging tentacles behind them. That "tangled mess" captures other jellies like a spider web captures flies.
